I was surprised to find my Topbox in my mailbox this month, I didn’t realize how far into April we are! Topbox has been doing a great job at providing its subscribers with some extras lately. It’s always fun to find a new product sample to try out!
I received a CoQ10 Caviar sheet mask, I always love to try these out, so I’m pleased. I received a Micellar Water by La Roche-Posay and have tried it out. It works well but I didn’t find it to be a game changer. A dry shampoo from Cake was also included, its smells like vanilla, but I haven’t had a chance to try it out yet.
A Laritzy Lip Pencil was in this month’s bag, its just not my colour, I’ll pass it along to someone. I assume that everyone received a Garnier Moisture Bomb sheet mask, so I’ll have another one to try out this week!
I also assume that everyone received a couple of trial samples of L’Oreal’s Hydra Genius. I did try one out, it’s similar to a couple of gel moisturizers currently on the market, I really like them, and I liked this product as well! Thanks Topbox, not a bad sampling this month and the “extras” are great!
I love when Topbox throws in an extra product or three, it’s always a great surprise and I usually love what they send. This month it was some Dove products. But first, some products that I wasn’t thrilled about.
Cake Desserted Island body products had always been a favourite of mine, I was excited to see it, but when I tried it, I felt like it didn’t smell as good as I remembered. So my “sniffer” isn’t working right or something has changed, either with the product or with me. Another Bella Aura product that went right into the garbage. I hate the smell. I think I’ve come to the end of what this brand has to offer, so I hope I won’t get anymore. I believe it’s been 5 months with this brand in every single Topbox.
I received a shampoo and conditioner from Curly Hair Solutions. I have curly hair, so I tested this one out without any extra curling products and let it air dry. It left my hair fairly soft and quite frizzy. No magical curling powers there! I also received an Eyeko waterproof eyeliner and I just love it. I have been using it daily since I received it. It goes on easily and stays on all day without smearing. It also removes quite easily with a wet facecloth. I think everyone received a bonus of Dove hair products, such a nice surprise to receive extra products. I can’t wait to try them out! An okay Topbox for me, but I’m completely happy. Love the eyeliner, I got to try a new curly hair shampoo, tried an old favourite brand and got three bonus products. Did I mention that I love the eyeliner…
My Topbox arrived and guess what I received AGAIN!? I have a few words about that later…
I received a hot oil treatment and I’m excited to give it a try, I have never heard of this brand before. I received a watermelon flavoured lip balm from Mettrum Originals. I Googled the company and apparently they sell medical cannabis along with this line of hemp based products and foods as well. I tried the lip balm out and it felt quite heavy and a bit waxy on the lips. It smells nice though.
I received a card sample of Cover Shot eye shadows from Smashbox. I just reviewed this palette in Golden Hour and I’ve really enjoyed it. Last and I hope it’s the last, please let it be the last. I received another sample of Bella Aura skincare. Topbox must have received samples of the the entire line, because this is the fourth month in a row I have received something from it. This one, like all of the others has a smell that I cannot tolerate and I threw it into the garbage immediately. I checked their website and there is one more item in the line that I’m willing to bet will be in March’s bag. I am happy with my Topbox this month, a couple of new products to try is always a nice thing. I hope I’ve seen the last of Bella Aura, but I guess I will find out next month.
I received these products for review through Glam Sense. I have very curly hair and I straighten it often. Keeping the “straightness” in is often a challenge, so I was excited to try these products to see how they would work.
I have to say that my first use of these products ended up in total straight hair disaster. I’ve used similar products for years, so I just went ahead and washed my hair with the shampoo, put on the conditioner, which I always leave on for as long as possible, once that was rinsed out, I put in the primer. My first indication that something had gone wrong was that my hair didn’t seem to want to dry, when I finally got to the styling part, it seemed greasy and really unmanageable. Dry shampoo to the rescue and I put my hair up into a bun THEN I read the instructions on the bottles. Oooops, user error.
Once I followed the instructions properly, I had much better success! The shampoo part, I did that right. The conditioner doesn’t say to leave on the hair, so I applied it from root to tip and rinsed immediately. The primer is not to to be applied all over (which I did) and one pump is to be used (I used several). The primer is to be smoothed from mid strand to the tip. I let my hair air dry and it was much straighter. When I used the flat iron on it, straightening was quick and easy. My hair felt very smooth and silky and smelled really good as well.
I’ve used these products 3 times in the past 10 days and have come to some conclusions. Curly hair is going to want to curl. I walked in misty fog one day for half an hour and although it did not go frizzy, it got big and puffy. I was able to straighten it again easily afterwards. When not exposed to direct dampness, my hair stayed straight and smooth easily for 3 days, it may have lasted longer, if I would have just stop touching it and running my fingers through it.
As you can see, once I used the products correctly, I was pleased with the results! They retail for around $10 CAD which is more expensive than a lot of shampoos and conditioners, but less than half the price of some straightening products that I use now. If your hair gets frizzy easily and you wish it would stay smoother longer, I think these products would be worth trying.
I’m underwhelmed by this month’s bag, but I’m not sure that it’s totally Topbox’s fault. There seems to be a lot of repetition in brands and some of those brands do not appeal to me, but they could be someone else’s favourite.
I received a sample size of Smashbox Full Exposure Mascara. I have several of these laying around and it is not a favourite of mine because the brush is so big and I tend to get more mascara on my eyelids than my eyelashes. The Bella Aura Skincare Antioxidant Booster looks promising, I have never tried this brand and if I like it, I’m still not going to pay $125 CAD for the full size of this product.
I received a Novex Leave in Conditioner. I’ve received 3 items from this brand this past year and it’s okay but I’d like to try something different than a leave in conditioner or hair mask. I was excited to see a nail polish from China Glaze and it’s Holo at ya Girl from the fall collection. Despite the name there is no “holo” in it and it’s a glitter topcoat. I’ve applied it with a sponge to get full opacity of colour. Because it’s a glitter topcoat, this might be the only time I wear it as glitter is difficult to remove and a peel off base coat (which I am using for this picture) doesn’t have the longevity I like. It is pretty though. Overall it’s a “meh” for this month’s Topbox for me. Hoping next month is more exciting for me.
A little bit late posting my Topbox opening this month, but better late than never! This one was sort of a letdown for me this month, but realistically they can’t be perfect every time.
I received a Revlon leave in conditioner, it smells amazing, but when I used it, my hair looked very dry and damaged. I’ll try it with a different shampoo next time and see if it makes any difference. I also got an Eyeko Fat Eyestick. I’ve used it several times to smudge on my eyeline, the colour is pretty but I don’t think I’ll be using it as an all over the lid eyeshadow.
I received a Jor’el Parker Fango Mud Therapy mask. This I liked, a lot! The mud dried quickly to a light green. I noticed the mask started to get dark again in my worst oily spots and then I realized it was actually drawing the oil right out of my pores. Washing off was messy, I’d recommend doing that in a shower. Afterwards my skin felt silky soft.
Even though this wasn’t my favourite Topbox, I do enjoy trying the new products and you never know when you might find something you love!
The Topbox shipment was running late this month, but what a surprise when I received it. I received an e-mail saying that a Unilever box would be included with no charge and moments later the doorbell rang and there was the mailman with my package! I’ll start with the Topbox first.
I also received a 3 in 1 anti aging cream by Marcelle. I’ve put it aside right now as I’m currently trying out something else, but I’ll be happy to try this one out. I received a B Spa grapefruit scented body lotion. It’s very nice, the consistancy is a bit runny, but it seems to moisturize my skin and it smells pretty good too.
I was thrilled to see Make Up Forever Ultra HD foundation in my bag. It turned out to be the perfect colour for my skin, I’ve been wearing it for days now. It’s a light to medium coverage foundation, that builds nicely if you want more coverage. It looks lovely on the skin and wears quite nicely on me through out the day!
There was a Dove body wash-tried it and it works great. There was a Vaseline Lip Therapy tin-also nice and works well. There was a shampoo, conditioner and hairspray by Nexxus-tried them all, love them all. My favourite anti-perspirant spray was also in the box! Simple cleansing cloths, Vaseline Intesive Care lotion and a Tresemmé hairspray were also included. Finally St. Ives Apricot Scub, I had just recently thought that I should review this as I have a full size. What a great treat and what a great month from Topbox! A thoroughly impressed customer here!
