Honest product reviews for the savvy consumer.

I picked this up at Meijer in the US for $6.19 USD.  I’ve been using it with the CoverGirl Clean Matte BB Cream  and the CoverGirl Clean Oil Control Foundation.  I bought the colour 535 medium light.

Let’s take a moment to appreciate a good pressed powder compact.  It’s portable, has a solid click when you close it, it has a puff pad included with room inside for it to fit nicely and it has a mirror.  CoverGirl knows how to do an economical compact!  I’ve been using it with a brush after my initial foundation application and then using the puff for touch ups throughout the day.  The colour seems dark when swatched, but blends out nicely to an almost translucent finish with a hint of colour.  The powder itself is not the luxurious soft and smooth texture that I love, but it certainly is not rough.  I really like that there is no fragrance as well.  This is a good powder that helps mattify oily skin, it’s made me want to have a second look at some of the CoverGirl compacts because this is the first one I’ve tried in many years and I like it!

My daughter received this through BzzAgent and because she doesn’t usually wear foundation and the colour turned out to be too light for her, she let me try it out.  I recently reviewed the BB Cream in this line by CoverGirl and it just didn’t work for me.  This foundation on the other hand is quite nice.  The colour is 505 Ivory and it comes in a glass bottle that doesn’t have a pump.

The colour is perfect on my fair skin, but too light if I’ve been in the sun.  It’s difficult to get the product out of the bottle as it’s not a runny foundation, I’ve been using a cotton swab to get it out.  It applies beautifully with a brush and gives a nice medium coverage and it builds well if you need more coverage.  Usually I get oily by mid day but I’ve found that this foundation keeps me less glowy well into the afternoon.  By the end of the day I’m still oily, but I’m grateful for those extra hours this foundation gives me.  If you have very oily skin like myself, this foundation is worth checking out!

Last month’s Topbox was quite disappointing, I had received some duplicates that I had just received in April.  I sent off an e-mail to Topbox and they said they would send replacements.  This month’s Topbox arrived and it was just like Christmas in July!  Everyone was also receiving an extra item because of possible mail delivery delays due to an impending postal strike.

My replacement items for last month’s Topbox was a full sized eyeliner by Teeez and a full sized mascara from Model Co.  The eyeliner is a marker type liner, I found it easy to use and a nice dark black color.  It stayed all day the first time I used it and on another day I wore it and I had some watering eyes and it was all over the place.  The mascara was a bit of a drier formula with a big bushy wand.  It was okay and I had a bit of flaking by the end of the day.  I’m still thrilled to have the replacements to try out and I will use them up.

My bonus item was a full sized Deborah Lippmann Nail polish, love the color!  I received a deluxe sample size of Grand Entrance Mascara by Elizabeth Arden, which I will save before trying so I can use up some open ones I have on the go.

I received a Génifique Yeux Light-Pearl by Lâncome.  It has the most oddly wonderful applicator!  It’s metal and swirls around.  It feels immediately cooling when the metal touches the skin and it feels fantastic when applied around the eyes.  I haven’t seen any spectacular results but it sure feels nice.

I was extremely happy to receive a Glam Glow product.  I have always wanted to try something from their line.  This one has exfoiliating particles and some small leaf pieces mixed in.  My skin felt great after using it, but not great enough to spend the money on a full sized one.  I also received a Coconut Hair Treatment from Revlon.  I haven’t tried it yet, but I will.

What a great Topbox this month and great customer service from them as well!  Topbox is $12 a month plus tax and you will receive 4 items every month.  If you are interested check them out here.

Flower Beauty will not be carried at Walmart in Canada anymore, so this is resulting in some great clearance prices.  I picked each of these up for $4 CAD.  The packaging is beautiful however not very functional if you want to carry it along with you.  The packaging is bulky, so I had difficulty slipping it into a tiny purse I like to carry, the lid also easily pops off.

The product on the other hand is wonderful.  This lip butter carries a good deal of colour and shine while still being sheer and comfortable on the lips.  I found it to be quite long lasting, even through eating and touched up easily.  The colours I chose are quite lovely, even the red had a sheerness that didn’t look too harsh on me.  You might have some luck finding some of these still on clearance at Walmart and I think you’ll be happy with them if you give them a try.

I had heard so many wonderful reviews about this BB Cream, I had to try it.  I picked it up at Meijer in the US for $7.29 USD.  This BB cream is marketed for oily skin gals like myself and I picked up the colour light medium to match my skin when I get a little bit of a tan or use self tanner.

This BB cream gives a good medium coverage, I have to sheer it out some with a sponge and this might be the reason I’ve not had good luck with it.  Although it looks great just after application, I start to get oily almost immediately and I am constantly blotting and powdering the whole day through.  I always think of BB creams as having a bit lighter coverage, but to me this is a foundation.  By the end of the day, my face does not look or feel good and I can’t wait to get it off my face.  Whatever the reason, if it’s the formula or user error, I think this is one is just not for me.

I went on a little Lush shopping spree last month and picked up this soap for $10.18 CAD.  It was quite the sizeable chunk and I had to slice it up to get it to fit into my tin.  I like sweet or fruity scents and this one is sweet and heavily fragranced.

I keep my soap in a Lush tin (can be picked up for $3.95 CAD) to prolong the life of it.  If it is left in the shower under streaming water, it would wither away to nothing as it is a pretty soft bar.  I find that it lathers quite well and fills the shower up with it’s fragrance but soon after drying off, the scent disappates.  My skin feels squeaky clean after use but a moisturizer of some sort is needed afterwards.  I really like the scent of this soap, but I will try another next time.  I only treat myself once in a while to these handmade soaps because they are quite pricey, but every once in awhile I’m worth it!

I’ve been searching for some new makeup brushes for quite some time and there were some specific types that I was looking for and I wanted them to be affordable.  I found what I was looking for at Walmart in the US!

I got the teal set for $6.94 USD. I was looking for that teeny tiny smudge brush, I wish it wasn’t a double ended but it works for what I needed it for.  The purple contour brush was $6.94 USD, I have been looking for this type of brush for my blush. The pink complexion brush is for my foundation at it cost $6.94 USD.  All of the brushes are soft, vegan, have rubberized no slip handles and they come in fun colours.  The teal Smoky Eyes set are a little bit shorter in handle length than the other two.

I also picked up the 7 Piece Face Kit for $16.94 USD.  This kit includes 6 brushes and a case that turns into a stand.  I will never use this as a stand or a travel case.  There were 3 brushes that caught my eye in this kit.  The powder brush, the angle shader brush and the smoky eye brush.  These brushes are also a bit shorter.

I have been using these for several weeks now and I think they are great brushes.  My absolute favourite is the smoky eye brush, with it’s dense angled cut it’s perfect for applying crease colour.  A couple have shed one or two hairs initially, but nothing since then.  These brushes are quite affordable, if you are looking for some new brushes, check them out, I think you’ll be pleased with the quality.
