Honest product reviews for the savvy consumer.

My search has ended!!!  I have found the matte liquid lipstick I thought should exist out there, somewhere.  I picked up the colour Sweet Pea at Walmart for $7.98 CAD and I’m thrilled with this product!  First of all it comes in a completely cute tin and it has a mirror in the lid.  Will I ever use this tin for anything?  Probably not, but it is adorable.

The colour range was absolutely beautiful, unfortunately for me though, not quite the colours I would wear.  The nude was much to brown for me and there were several gorgeous dark colours that I would never wear.  Sweet Pea was exactly right for me.  The product smells like vanilla cake batter, very pleasing!

I found that it was very easily applied and dried down to a matte finish quite quickly.  It feels very comfortable on the lips and was not drying.  It doesn’t claim to be long wearing, but this product wears away very gracefully.  I wore it while eating and afterwards it just looked faded and not messy.  I was very impressed!  It reapplied over itself with ease and did not get clumpy or flakey.  I love this matte lip mousse!  I certainly hope that they will expand the colour range at some point because I want more!

I was excited to visit an Ulta while on vacation in the United States recently, I really wanted to look at Makeup Revolution line.  The Makeup Revolution displays were virtually empty, so I was guessing it must be popular!  I picked up this blush palette for $8.00 USD.  This eight pan palette has 1 shimmer blush, 5 mattes and 2 baked blushes.

The shimmer and the matte blushes are very soft and silky and easily blended.  The baked blushes are rough and gritty to the touch, pressed very hard but are still soft and blendable once applied to the cheeks.  The lone shimmer blush has very minimal shimmer to it.

Although the colours are pretty, there are a few that look so similar that there really isn’t as big of a selection as you might think there is.  The 3 matte pinks in fact are so close in tone that once blended out, there really isn’t a difference.

I have found that the blushes wear very well and a little will go a long way.  The two baked blushes are frosty enough to use as a highlight and can change the look of the matte blushes when applied on top.  For the price these blushes can’t be beat!

I picked this top coat up because I had never seen anything like it before.  It cost about $3.00 CAD at Shoppers Drug Mart.  This is a sheer white polish that makes any nail polish turn more pastel with each coat that is applied on top.  You can create an ombré effect with all of the nails on your hand or you can ombré each nail.  I chose to do each hand.

I was happy with the look I got, but a I think a darker polish would give a more dramatic ombré look.  The idea is that you leave one nail with none of the top coat, the next nail you add one coat, the next nail you add two coats and so on.  My thumb has a base coat, 2 coats of polish and a top coat on it and my pinky finger has a base coat, 2 coats of polish, 4 coats of Pastel Ombré and another topcoat.  That’s a lot of polish!  I found that it was streaky and bubbled when it dried, but from a distance you can’t really see those things.  I really like this top coat, I think it’s a fun and different way to get an Ombré nail look without having to use many bottles of nail polishes!

When I received an e-mail asking if I would like to try out a new product from TRESemmé, I couldn’t have been more excited!  I hopped right on to their website to check out what new products were coming out and was excited to discover they had a new Reverse Hair Wash System.  I was hoping this would be the product and it was!

These Beauty-Full Volume products are made to combat the weightiness that can happen to your hair when you shampoo and condition your hair in the regular manner.  Sometimes conditioner can make your hair heavier and look flat.  I actually rely on this method because I am a hair abuser!  I have naturally curly hair and here’s what I do to it:  Every 4 to 5 weeks I lighten the roots to get rid of my brown and grey hair.  I wash and heavily condition my hair every couple of days then blow dry it as straight as I can get it, then I go in with a flat iron.  On days I don’t wash my hair, I go at it again with a flat iron to remove any kinks.  I haven’t had my hair cut in several years, and I get a lot of breakage.  I was very excited to try something new and I’ll tell you I’m very happy with the results!

The first part of this system is the Pre-Wash Conditioner.  You wet your hair and add a few pumps of the conditioner and leave it on for a minute then rinse out.  Next you use the Shampoo and wash your hair in the regular manner.  I thought my hair would feel tangled when rinsing out the Shampoo, but it didn’t.  I also received a Hair Maximizer that helps with volume and softness.  I always use a leave in conditioner with my regular routine so after I towel dried my hair, I added a dime sized amount of the Maximizer and worked it into my hair, it felt like a leave in conditioner to me which was just fine.  The products smell great, but if you are not into scented products, don’t worry, it disappates.  The big test came with the blow dryer.  Even with a smoothing brush my hair wants to curl, so I usually end up very frizzy after blow drying.  My hair frizz was actually very minimal which was very surprising.  I found it very easy to use the flat iron as well and in the end, my hair was very soft and did not hang limp.

I am very pleased with the outcome after using these three products!  My hair felt clean, conditioned and soft.  Volume is not a problem I usually worry about, but after my normal hair routine, it’s always very flat and limp, day 2 hair is always my favourite hair day.  With the Beauty-Full Volume system, I had my day 2 hair right away!  I’m glad I had the opportunity to try this system out and equally glad that it worked for my hair!

I found this setting spray by wet n wild and snapped it up for $4.99 USD.  First of all I didn’t realize that wet n wild had a setting spray and secondly the price was so good I had to try it!  The packaging is cute with markings on the lid reminiscent of lens markings on a camera.

The pump delivers a fine mist that feels great on the skin and it dries quite quickly.  The smell reminds me a bit like hairspray, but it disappates after it’s applied.  I think it does a great job setting my makeup and since using it  I feel my makeup looks better for a longer period of time.  This may be the most inexpensive setting spray on the market right now!  If you are thinking of trying one out and didn’t want to spend a lot of money, this product is a good place to start.

I found this at Meijer in the States for $7.99 USD.  I’ve been hearing a lot of buzz about lip oils and I was very interested in trying one out.  I bought 05 Repairing Primrose.  The Lip Treatments in the Milani line cater to different lip problems but I suspect they are all very similar.  The one I bought is infused with Rosehip Oil and smells like roses.

The packaging is very appealing and the wand is huge.  The wand is very stiff and and doesn’t deliver much product, in fact it almost feels dry and I have to scoop some of the product out to use it.

Because the wand is so big, you really don’t get very much product either.  The container is really only two thirds full.  The oil itself feels and looks like a clear gloss.  I thought that it would be more pink, but it’s really just the container colour that makes it look that way.  I’ve just given a good list of negative things about this product, but surprisingly I really like it.  I’ve been using it at bedtime and my lips have felt pretty good each morning.  I also put it on before doing my make up and when I go to put on my lipstick, which is usually the last thing I apply, my lips feel conditioned.  I think it’s quite pricey for the amount of product you receive, but if you can get it on sale, buy one and try it out!

I ran out to the mailbox as soon as I got my notification via e-mail that my Topbox had just been delivered.  I must say that I’m very happy with what I received this month.

I received a Morgan Taylor nail lacquer in the colour Later Alligator.  I love nail polish but the colour is not something I would normally wear.  I tried it out, it had full opacity in two coats, was very easy to work with and turns out I love green on my nails!  I also received a Smashbox Photo Finish Primer sample.  I just happen to be working on another sample I have of this very product.  I love it and I’m happy to have another as backup!

I received a POP Beauty Kajal Pen in he colour Inky Purple.  It’s not a pen, it’s a creamy pencil with a smudger on the other end.  I’m not sure this will work for me because it did smudge away very easily, but I’ll try it out for sure.

And something from what’s becoming a favourite Canadian brand of mine!  A Sea Salt Soap from Nova Scotia Fisherman.  It’s made of Organic Shea Butter and I’m very excited to try it out!

Now that Birchbox has decided to pull out of Canada, I think it’s time for Topbox to shine!  I’ve had really great products from them in the past several months and completely happy with their service.  I always know when my bag is coming because I get an e-mail saying it’s been shipped and then I get an e-mail from Canada Post saying it’s in my mailbox when it’s arrived!  If you are interested in trying out Topbox, here is a link to their website.
